Alberta’s energy sector, and the global energy landscape, is vast and complex. Getting a handle on the big picture is a helpful starting point. As we learn some key parts of this picture, we’re going to share them with you here.

THE BIG 3

The Panel is going to examine three major streams of the energy business that fall under Alberta’s royalty framework: crude oil and liquids; natural gas; and oil sands.

Each of these streams involves distinct geology, prices, and market considerations. And each has a different royalty structure, which may need to change to meet our goals and expectations.

We’ll be sharing what we learn about these streams. As the conversation evolves, you’ll be able to click on the icons to dig deeper and explore each of these streams. We’ll be asking for your thoughts about them, and we welcome any wisdom you’re willing to share.

We want as many Albertans as possible to give us input on our royalty framework, so we thank you for inviting other Albertans to be a part of the conversation. You can do this in any number of ways:

First, you can email your contact list. Below is the text of an email for you to share if you wish. You can use as much or as little of it as you want – we’re just giving you a starting point.

As you may know, the Government of Alberta has begun a royalty review.

As part of this, the review panel has established a website to collect input from the public and I think it’s important that you participate in this conversation over the next two months. You can share your thoughts at letstalkroyalties.ca. The site will ask questions and provide periodic updates on what the panel is hearing. You can also share your input on the panel’s social media if you so choose.

I’m really hoping you’ll take the time to participate in this conversation, now and throughout the course of the review. A strong turnout of Albertans to voice their thoughts will do a great service to the royalty review conversation.

We’re inviting you to have several conversations with us, over several stages. Each stage is going to feed into the next. We’re going to ask you questions, and consider what you say. On a regular and frequent basis, we’re going to report back and reflect what you’ve told us, and ask you more questions based on that.
